Review: Cloverfield(2008)

Via IMDb

Do you remember the scene in Godzilla when the moron is taking a picture of Godzilla even as it advances towards him? Nearly gets trampled doesnt he??? Well Cloverfield is like a whole movie dedicated to that person. So instead now he is recording everything when the more sensible option is to run. Or maybe save somebody being attacked. That bad? Nah! That fun :)

To tell the truth i am a fan of well done up found footage movies. N i count rec, grave encounters, blair witch, paranormal n even the rarely seen Poughkeepsie tapes in my fav movie list. But sadly cloverfield wont feature in it for the simple reason its not a horror movie. It has nothing in it for me. It is an excellent thriller action movie, but no horror. So basically its a fun ride with borrowed concept from the horror world.

Well Jj abram n drew goddard wanted to see how a creature movie with real time footage would be like. Yeah its pretty good. Keeps the adrenaline running. Except i never understood why would someone shoot a damn Godzilla instead of running away. But i am ready to suspend my beliefs for a good movie n i do so. N fortunately it turns out its a fine fun movie.

The plot revolves around a group of small people whose party gets interuppted as their city gets attacked by a monster. The heroine ,who had left early, gets trapped in her apartment n the group which includes her boyfriend go to rescue her even as the army fights the monster around them.

T.j miller as the one who keeps documenting stuff to show people 'what went down' is really the one who keeps the proceedings lively. Jokes, dumb n stupid questions all from him. So we are kept in good spirits. The loverboy(michael staht david) who has to rescue his ladylove(odette annabelle) also is decent making his sudden transformation of heart believable. And others are good too in their small roles. As for the script- well nothing innovative. Just the standard monster movie with some 9/11 references. Action scenes were pretty good. Plotholes loom large though.
Director Matt reeves has given us a great movie. An entertaining ride with not much scares. So a diehard horror fan i was expecting a little more. But still as an action thriller matt reeves has created a wonderful movie. N even though there are only a couple of shots of the creature he makes us tense throughout.

The monster n the crawlies that come off it are very well done. As you will see if you haven't already the crawlies are uber dangerous. Look at them attack :)

All in all hype didnt go in vain. Its a fun thrilling 80minutes of mayhem.

HighTension meter- 6.7/10.
