To start off i m frankly gonna tell you this that i havent watched much of the derided exploitation cinema. It isnt my cup of tea n i m gonna keep it that way. But i've watched some rape revenge dramas like Straw Dogs, I Spit On Your Grave, Irreversible, The Last House On The Left, Girls Against Boys etc. N no kidding i liked them. N this is the male point of view. Today i wanna talk about how female directors/writers could have actually made a difference showing the same things. Lets see.
Meir Zarchi director of I Spit On Your Grave ,which is one of the most hated movies of all time cos of the infamous 45mins rape scene, encountered a rape survivor n also the corrupt police officers in New York. So he decided to make such a movie. And as a common factor of all these movies the rape survivor kills the rapists. As they cant in real let me show her killing n exacting her revenge. Great. Good to watch. You come out feeling all pumped out n stuff. But is it for real? Is that the solution? No. Thats just bullshit. You are living in la la land. If you really wanna make a feminist movie think like a woman. Does a woman really wanna kill her rapists? How many can she kill? Half of the people back in 1978 watching the movie were in it for the brutal rape scenes. Those are potential rapists come the right opportunity. Well how many can she kill n say that now i am safe? For every criminal killed hundreds are ready to take his place.
I never claimed that i understood woman or i know how to make a feminist movie. No i dont. I enjoy movies where the rapists get killed. But that looks good for America. But in India we dont get guns. Our women dont carry knives or learn karate. Very few actually carry anything of any sort to defend themselves. Yes its changing now but they abhor violence n revenge. So i realize what a girl who gets raped with no intention of perpetrating it on the criminals want. Like a normal girl she wants a life of respect n dignity. Forget the episode asap n move on. Plus get the scum arrested n get justice. Thats that. Simple n straight. No action packed gunfights n knifing. Just get that bastard imprisoned for life or hanged or whatever.
So thats what a female will bring to the table. She will show how we can actually prevent crime against women. The real solution. How boys need to be thought that women arent objects. N that isnt saying that dont fantasize about them or anything. But dont treat them like one. Women can say no. A real man can take no. Yes you would be super pissed off but hurting somebody isnt the solution buddy. N the movies never dealt on subjects like the parents role in bringing about change. A girl treated like shit as compared to her brother. A father who is hitting her wife. Where are the good lessons? So women actually will identify with that. Men really cant. Simply said even if a man gets raped he wont nearly identify what a woman who gets assaulted goes through. Men are aggressive so want revenge. Women think a lot more before turning violent so long term solutions would be presented. N i havent seen a horror movie presenting long term solutions regarding the various forms of violence n exploitation of women.
So in the end i will say that i wont try n write a perfect feminist movie. I've been brought up by a single mom so i realize a lot more than most people what women go through but thats not enough. I certainly feel women writers n directors can change quite a few things. The soft touch, the sanity, a little less unneccesary violence n unexploitative potrayal of women. Plus the dynamics between woman characters would be more forthcoming. Simply said a woman can sketch out a woman's trials n tribulations more accurately, right? Women director/writers where art thou?
