Review : Aftermath (1994) Short FIlm

Via horrorhappyhour.com

A mortician indulges in his fantasy after his colleague goes home for the night.

And that's what I infer from this notorious horror short. Horror has given us lots of controversial things to ponder about. But this takes the cake. Based on the ever present to make us uncomfortable topic of mortality. It shows us what really happens after death. And as expected its not a date movie material. It can shock you. Really really shock you. Even make you puke. But as a fan of shock n gory movies I lapped it up. Every bit of it. And you will too if you realize that gore and blood can have meaning too. Unlike me who doesn't need meaning to lap up sicko stuff. Nice!!!

Nacho Cerda is famous and infamous all because of the same thing. This short. Taboo handled with care and style. He knew it was bound to create problems but he went on with his vision and created a masterful piece of horror cinema which can knock the wrong person unconscious. Blood and the best fake dead bodies and body parts ever used means you have 30 minutes of unsettling drama about a topic you rather not think about. It fills you with dread and sometimes appalls you and makes you laugh at the apparent uselessness of all the nervous breakdowns you had cos of death obsession. And all this without any dialogues and in only the 2nd movie as a director. WOW!!Hats off. He does get the point across pretty boldly. And my ambition to write sick movies with noble aspirations just got a boost. Really awesome work!!!!!

Its Pep Tosar all the way in this mind numbing necrophilia drama. A cold work weary mortician changes to something else in the 2nd half of this long short film. And you can't imagine how as a method actor he prepared for this utterly disturbing role. One thing's for sure. He would have gone mad and apparently he even admitted to Cerda that it's so. So in retrospect it's a bold bold work from the Sleep Tight star. And awesome as hell. And not to mention creepy and many other adjectives and superlatives.....

Cinematography is class. And you have to see it, if you haven't, to believe it. Shot inside a real mortuary it reeks of atmosphere which can make yo shout out loud. At the apparent coldness and indifference by which humans can treat humans. And with this a great musical score and editing make this a shock to remember. If you see the whole film that is.......

HighTension Verdict: A short which is a tad long but with its shocking and absorbing story it can  suck you in or spit you out. It can hurt your senses but only if you aren't a horror fan. And on the other hand you will be introduced to an underrated director who hasn't seen the kind of adulation he deserves. Plus Spain and France are the leading 'shock and philosophy'  horror films factory. So please don't miss this.

HighTension Meter: 8.5/10.
